RHEL4 gnome-session cannot open display:

Platform: RHEL4

Problem: when I login from the server console, I get the error message

(gnome-session: 6090): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I have a similar RHEL server that does not have this problem, but I have not identified the difference. Looked for other threads in this forum for the same problem, but did not find one.

Thanks in advance...

you mentioned server console, which I assume is runlevel 3. You need to be on runlevel 5 in order to get the display. Linux allows you to have display on the server as well as on another Linux box running X windows.

On same server:-
1. Go to runllevel 5 by issuing the command "init 5".
2. Alternatively, edit the /etc/inittab file and change the default entry to 5. Then reboot.
3. Export the display to another Linux machine/desktop.
On server A (runlevel 3)
export DISPLAY=<serverB IP>:0.0

On server B (runlevel 5)
xhost +

Afterwards run the command on server A and the output will be on server B.

4. If you have VNC server, start vnc on any display mode.
vncserver :1
netstat | grep vnc

Once you get the port, connect via IE or vncviewer. Run the program and set the DISPLAy variable to localhost:1.

I would suggest you read or do googling for DISPLAY.
