Requesting help to get a samba server on my Ubuntu 9.04 Linux machine
I am a newbie. Please help...I am requesting help to get a samba server on my Ubuntu 9.04 Linux machine at home here. It seems that nothing works consistently. I can't even see my /home/vince anymore. System boots up good I guess, am able to see my webcam. Pictures aren't that good. GoogleEarthLinux is yuch compared with the Windows version...Anyways, I'm also frustrated 'cause anything I have searched on the web for help has not let me down the golden path. Past suggestions on the forum didn't address my problem. So here it is...samba always needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled and reconfigured to even have the hopes of running it and hoping to get it to connect to a Windows computer. I am just about ready to go back to Windows, and never to return. Please help. Is there any super basic easy set up so that I cannot miss a instruction or tittle to get it going on my Linux machine and have bi-direction data transfer with me Windows XP laptop ? I tell you this much, the GUFW has the right ports open, and pinging on the Windows and Linux machines reveal that they can see each other.

It is nasty trying to work with windows because the rules keep changing. But, it looks like what you have mostly missed is just the rt-click method - uninstall samba and do that. Usually you want to share the Public folder. You must enable guest access if you want it to just appear in windows network neiborhood for use right away, and you must enable write access for two way to that folder. |
