Raid Missing Spares

Hello Everyone, and thank you in advance for reading this post,

i would like to know why i have a "Missing Spares Event" mail in my mailbox,

when i have:

/dev/md0:
Version : 00.90.03
Creation Time : Wed May 2 21:43:31 2007
Raid Level : raid1
Array Size : 4883648 (4.66 GiB 5.00 GB)
Device Size : 4883648 (4.66 GiB 5.00 GB)
Raid Devices : 2
Total Devices : 3
Preferred Minor : 0
Persistence : Superblock is persistent

Update Time : Wed Jun 20 07:35:40 2007
State : clean
Active Devices : 2
Working Devices : 3
Failed Devices : 0
Spare Devices : 1

UUID : 54e3a1e3:f3c4f0b1:aab5da53:a9e520f8
Events : 0.28

Number Major Minor RaidDevice State
0 8 1 0 active sync /dev/sda1
1 8 49 1 active sync /dev/sdd1

2 8 33 - spare /dev/sdc1

clearly indicating, i think that i have 1 spare, and no failed devices.

here are the two other arrays:

/dev/md1:
Version : 00.90.03
Creation Time : Wed May 2 21:44:37 2007
Raid Level : raid1
Array Size : 4835456 (4.61 GiB 4.95 GB)
Device Size : 4835456 (4.61 GiB 4.95 GB)
Raid Devices : 2
Total Devices : 3
Preferred Minor : 1
Persistence : Superblock is persistent

Update Time : Mon Jun 4 11:51:24 2007
State : clean
Active Devices : 2
Working Devices : 3
Failed Devices : 0
Spare Devices : 1

UUID : ae27aaf0:2fef588f:76b0603c:cec4e1fb
Events : 0.8

Number Major Minor RaidDevice State
0 8 2 0 active sync /dev/sda2
1 8 50 1 active sync /dev/sdd2

2 8 34 - spare /dev/sdc2
/dev/md2:
Version : 00.90.03
Creation Time : Wed May 2 21:45:32 2007
Raid Level : raid1
Array Size : 478664640 (456.49 GiB 490.15 GB)
Device Size : 478664640 (456.49 GiB 490.15 GB)
Raid Devices : 2
Total Devices : 3
Preferred Minor : 2
Persistence : Superblock is persistent

Update Time : Thu Jun 21 01:02:52 2007
State : clean
Active Devices : 2
Working Devices : 3
Failed Devices : 0
Spare Devices : 1

UUID : 79a20736:e5901acd:008efbd2:a7a50380
Events : 0.826

Number Major Minor RaidDevice State
0 8 3 0 active sync /dev/sda3
1 8 51 1 active sync /dev/sdd3

2 8 35 - spare /dev/sdc3

becuase it is a core 2 duo, i decided to run with Debian in 64 bit mode.

i cant see why i would get a spares missing event, if it can simply see that there is a spare there, already.

can any one see any kind of problems i would run into with this kind of setup?

according to what i read here i have 3 raid(multiple device) devices, because i needed 3 partitions,

i have some redundancy, and the spare(s) will auto magically get repopulated when one of the devices fail.

thank you in advance

for 1 i find it a little disturbing that you created 3 separate raids from 3 hard drives.

I dont know how it will behave when three separate raids try attempt to recover using the same spare

in future create 1 raid and partition it 3 ways

eitherway the spare for some reason may have either
1. dropped out at some stage
2. another device stole /dev/sdc position at some stage
3. /dev/sdc failed /dev/sdd replaced it in the raid
however /dev/sdc was relegated to spare
