RAID 1 rebuild with different hdd

Hello,

I have a server with 2 identical harddisk (WDC Green 3 TB) set with raid 1 mirror, one of the harddisk is fail. i would like to replace and rebuild the failed one with brand new harddisk.
the question is, can i use difeerent harddisk.? coz i want to use wdc red instead of green.
So there will be 1 wdc red and 1 wdc green, both are in the same capacity. can i do that.?

Thank you

Of course you can. The HDDs can even be of different sizes, provided that the new one is bigger than the old one, of course.

Actually using HDDs of different production lots, or even of different brands, is a clever thing to do with RAID setups, as it minimizes the chances of two disks dying at about the same time.

PS: You don't even need HDDs for RAID, you can use any block device, but never mind .

when I bought the server machine, there is no wdc red. therefore i use wdc green (because wdc black is very expensive and there is no capacity 3 TB). now i will use wdc red to replace the broken green wdc.

thank you

No worries, I've used a RAID1 with 1 WDC drive and 1 Maxtor drive for years .
