Question on LDAP

Can it be used to store login authentication and desktop customization for both windows and linux user accounts? like for example: the user can use one username and password when logging in to a windows or linux machine?

Are there any guides online to make this work?

not exactly can full fill your requirement, samba schema+ldap + login script path allow you to manage windows, ldap+nis schema+login script path to manage linux pc.
