Question about syslog.conf and the "-" symbol

Hi all,

I know that the "-" symbol in the syslog.conf means "omit the file's sync after every write".

So, the use of "-" should improve the logging perfomance, right?

But if I use "-" (ex. mail.* -/var/log/maillog), how long it will take, effectively, from a disk syncronization to the next one?

Thankyou

Hi h725,

In my opinion, there's no sence of doing that with mail servers.

If you use mail server just for yourself (or small network), you will not observe any performance improvement because of rare transactions.

If your mailserver serves a huge system, you'd better loss some performance but save all the logs.
