Publishing hostname

Hi,
I need some help publishing a hostname on a network so that other hosts can access my computer through its hostname, not through its ip address.

There is a Windows DNS Server on the network but I am not able to configure it.

How can I do that?

Thanks,
Bruno

You can use the wins components of samba to do this for netbios, but in general it's a horrible thing to want to do, and would only be usable for netbios clients themselves. Use DNS properly, that's what it's there for.

Ask the system administrator to add the hostname to the DNS server. Did work for me.

I appreciate that, but there are viable ways to do things and non-viable ways. Speak to your admins.

for Linux hosts that don’t have samba running but want to register themselves on a windows DNS server (2003) that is allowing secure dns updates.

doesn't appear to be very automated.. If it works, please let us know.
