Ptoftp server move won't read config file

Hey all, we are retiring an old FTP server so on the new box (Ubuntu-server) and installed ProFTP server. I copied the old config section and do see this;

AuthPAM off
AuthUserFile /etc/proftpd/proftpd.passwd
AuthGroupFile /etc/proftpd/proftpd.group

so I copied both that and those files to the same location and restarted. I still can only login with a local user, and don't want to create local users just for FTP.

Is there any thing else I can look at or check as I am not familiar with proftp.

Tnx

Hmm have you checked that the new server's probably-also-new proftpd version reads the config files from the same location?

And that it expects config files in the same format as the old server's proftpd? (If you have a newer proftpd with the new Ubuntu server, maybe it has changed the spec for its config files - you are now trying to feed it config files for an older version of itself, which might cause trouble?)

Have you also checked that EXACTLY the same users exist on the new server vs. the old server? I. e. if you refer to certain users in the proftpd config files that were on the old system, but probably AREN'T on the new one, couldn't that possibly cause a problem?
