Unhappy problem connecting to a pure-ftpd server

Hi
I installed pure-ftpd on a server and I followed the instructions from various sites
#apt-get install pure-ftpd-common pure-ftpd
#groupadd ftpgroup
#useradd -g ftpgroup -d /dev/null -s /etc ftpuser
#pure-pw useradd test1 -u ftpuser -d /home/ftpusers/test1
#pure-pw mkdb
#pure-pw passwd test1
#pure-pw mkdb

but wen I try connecting from another Pc, using ftp client this is what happens: it connects and rigth after disconnects

< 220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------
< 220-You are user number 1 of 50 allowed.
< 220-Local time is now 11:27. Server port: 21.
< 220-This is a private system - No anonymous login
< 220 You will be disconnected after 15 minutes of inactivity.
> USER test1
< 331 User test1 OK. Password required
> PASS (hidden)
Connection closed

Can some one help me.
