I'm looking into revamping our name servers which are currently BIND based, during the revamp I was hoping to introduce different name servers to avoid a dependency on a single product.
Has anyone got any experience running things like djbdns, MaraDNS, M$ DNS etc in a reasonably large environment, ideally co-existing with other name server software?
I wasn't sure if I should post this in "Linux - Server" or "Linux - Networking", I thought about cross posting it whilst typing it all in capitals but I hear the mods are an evil bunch (how are you all?!? My first post in over a year :s)
Any views welcome, I'm off to read read read about DNS solutions
i currently administer a M$ DNS service with active directory, and it's just pants. i'm actively looking to get in to bind, via an IPAM solution like ipcontrol or vitalqip. it'd be a potentially bad tinsg relying on a single product if that's a commercial product with commercial support which could go under. bind is not this though. there's nothing wrong with using by far the most common name server in the history of the internet. it's not going to go bust or anything like that.
correct forum btw. dns is implemented by a server, not a network. close call though i guess.

you know, i *swore* i read jlharris... shit man, sorry... how's things?
either way IPAM stuff isn't cheap, and it's normally dns, dhcp and management framework / tools in a single platform which makes a lot of sense. if you don't need to manage anything to any great extent probably a waste of money. not cheap at all for vitalqip... works out at £2.20 per ip address for our propsed implementation of 15,000 ip's... just to replace an excel spreadsheet. but you're big and ugly enough for bind ehh? that said i've no reason to think maradns isn't up to the job too...

- I see that you've got your RHCE now, cool stuff. I'm currently working towards my RHCA which is proving to be pretty hardcore! Glad to see your still LQ'ing, only 22K posts though?

My main reason for looking at other solutions is to see if there's a better way, or if we're best carrying on with BIND; it may be the case, but I want to avoid the "we've always done it that way" syndrome.

as i've mentioned a few times elsewhere here, i don't really respect my rhce as much as i'd like to, it was just too easy for me. RHCA certainly looks to be a big big step beyond, but as i've not done it i'm incliend to reserve judgement on it!
and i think you'll find it's now 25.5k posts...

yeah totally, and without my own experience of other suitable alternatives i'm naturally inclined to say BIND BIND BIND BIND just because i'm stuck with the M$ duffers here, potentially very short sighted. but i've not found a single IPAM product that doesn't always base itself very very firmly on ISC DHCP and BIND.
