I never thought it could be this easy. I installed dovecot and it worked out of box. While I was able to receive emails but I could not send emails using outlook (socket error 10060). Port 25 is open and I can send emails once I am logged in locally into the server or through the sites hosted on the server.

Any hints?

Have a look at the Qmailtoaster project:
www.qmailtoaster.com

We even have an ISO that will give you a running mail server in about 20 minutes with CentOS.

Thank you, QmailToaster project looks very interesting and I will definitely try it out.

As for the sendmail, i figured out part of the problem and that was to enable SASL-AUTHD and configure sendmail.mc to use "PLAIN LOGIN" and created "sendmail.pem" in the right /etc/pki/tls/sendmail.pm.

now when i use

telnet localhost 25

I am able to connect but i cannot connect on port 465 from localhost

but when i use

telnet mydomain.com 25

it times out therefore I used nmap from remote host which doesnot show port 25 or 465 as open ports.

Once again I can send mail from localhost and receive mail from all.

/etc/mail/access file allows only localhost localhost.localdomain to relay mail.

this should be piece of cake for you guys to figure out
