phpBB, Unbuntu, and a Mail Server

I'm running Ubuntu Server ver. 6, and the latest version of phpBB. Everything is working fine- except for one thing.

It would be really nice to send out mass emails to the users, and to make it so the user has to get an email to be able to complete registration (I've been getting a ton of spam bots lately...). So I guess my question is, do I really need to set up a mail server to be able to do that? Or is there a way to route it through gmail or another email provider? And if I do need to set up a mail server, does anyone know of any good tutorials, because I can't find any, and it's getting rather frustrating.

Thanks in advance!
