I am surprised that linking the executable is successful. I have found this article:

As it seems you have to have a php module compiled for apache, and then put it in the right directory.

Note that I just scanned quickly thru the document, I did not study it in depth. I hope you are able to find the answers you need.

A good link. One takeaway from this is that when I have to do this over again I'll likely work from a package manager.
