permission problems with a cifs mount.

I want to mount a folder on my Linux server for my mail client so that if my system (FC11) goes pop my mail is safe on the server. As it's for the mail client it needs read write access. If I browse to the samba share I have the correct access rights. But when I mount it as a folder no joy, read only.

This is what the mount looks like when I ls -l

drwxrwxrwx 4 353 400 0 2009-12-13 20:26 test

The line in fstab looks like....

//192.168.0.1/mail /home/MY-USER-NAME/test cifs user=MY-USER-NAME,rw,users,umask=000 0 0

(MY-USER-NAME == my real user name, removed here just in case )

Try editting your fstab and stripping the "umask" parameter

Ta, did find it a bit confusing where it should be. Anyway got it working!

//192.168.0.1/mail /home/MYUSER/.mozilla-thunderbird cifs credentials=/root/samba-cred-file,uid=MYUSER,gid=MYUSER,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,rw 0 0

One thing I did notice when reading so many docs on the net that some people put the credentials file in the /etc/samba folder. This has to be wrong as it's readable by normal users, I've put mine in the root folder. My normal user account can't read it.

And what happens if you have the credentials file in /etc/samba and as root do 'chown root:root /etc/samba/samba-cred-file' and 'chmod 600 /etc/samba/samba-cred-file'?

Thumbs up

No idea? I guess it's becomes private too the root. But I don't recall that step in some of the articles I read. Nice tip, ta.
