Password-less SSH only works on 1 of 2 machines?

I have setup password-less SSH on 2 machines the same way, but it only works on one.

3 machines
2 remotes :-
A : 192.168.109.15
B : 192.168.109.17
1 local :-
C : other

On both remote machines (A & B)
Code:
ssh-keygen -t rsa
On 3rd machines (C) of which I want to connect to both A & B.
Code:
 scp /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub 192 168 109 15:/root/.ssh/authorized_keys
 scp /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub 192 168 109 17:/root/.ssh/authorized_keys
Running the commands on the first pass asks me for the password - which is ok.
Running the command again on machine A then just works, without asking for the password - as one would expect.
But machine B keeps asking me for my password!

ssh -vvv logs :-
Machine A - works

Firstly check the permissions on machine B.
the .ssh directory should be 600

You don't mention retrieving the keys from A and B and putting them both on machine C
Since your commands bear little resemblance to the man scp description of how it should be done ,it's hard to see who's who in them.

is authorized_keys on the local or remote machine ?

Also, why do you create 2 separate keys on the remote machines ?

It is far simpler to create a private / public key pair on machine C, then copy the public key to both remote machines, or as many remote machines as you want.

It strikes me that you are trying to gain access to machine B using machine A's key.

The /root folder up to .ssh had some funny user rights set :-
Code:

/root/.ssh
4 drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Jan 1 00:21 .
8 drwxr-xr-x 5 11130 10513 4096 Jan 1 00:04 ..

and from /root
8 drwxr-xr-x 5 11130 10513 4096 Jan 1 00:04 root
A chmod back to root:root sorted out the ssh problem!!
Many thanks

That doesnt need to be done, I only need to access A & B from C.
Giving them my public key so they dont need to ask me for my password.

The scp command was actually (dots went missing!). From machine C to A and B :-
Code:
scp /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub 192.168.109.15:/root/.ssh/authorized_keys
which is correct.

authorized_keys is on the remote machines A & B.
Create the keys so that it creates the folder and an empty authorized_keys file. Then the scp easier.

That is what I am doing!
The scp is copying the public key from C to A & B.

Thanks.

You never mentioned creating keys on your machine, only the remote ones, so I assumed you had done things in reverse.
If it works, good. SSH is very picky about permissions.
I assume you know about using a keychain to store your password, so you can script the scp commands ?

GACK! You're allowing root to have ssh access? Even via keys that isn't a real good idea.

Selinux!

I've been bitten a couple of times by this too, except the reason was selinux blocking access to /root/.ssh/authorized_keys

Solution:
restorecon -R /root/.ssh

or disable selinux in /etc/selinux/config
