Opinions of Devil Linux as a File Server

Im wondering whats the opinion of devil linux as a file server. Is it a live cd? If so, would that cause issues? Im interested in anything pos/neg about this distro. How are it's other features, such as DNS, DHCP, ect?

Also open to suggestions for other distros.

Thanks

I can't say I have ever heard of it...

What exactly is it that you are drawn to about this particular distribution?

I was drawn to this particular distro because it focus on server functions. I did a search on 'linux firewall distros' along with ipcop, devil linux came up. And since they didnt have their own forums, I came here for advise. It doesnt seem like a popular distro tho.

I dunno honestly what drawn me to this distro. I guess the great unknown took me in.

Yes, it's a CD-based distro. No, that shouldn't really cause you any issues. There's actually some advantages to having your root filesystem reside on read-only media. Additionally, Devil Linux includes a fairly decent amount of hardening (grsecurity, SSP, etc). It was pretty focused on gateway/firewall functionality at first, but they eventually lost that focus and started including packages for more server-oriented applications. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's just how things are.

I played with it once a few years ago and thought it was pretty cool. I do know a couple people that use it a lot and they've had extremely good experiences with it. Just make sure you are comfortable with the command-line as this isn't a GUI distro. Keep in mind it's based on Linux 2.4 - so you won't get the cutting-edge features of Linux 2.6. That's actually a good thing from a security point of view, which is probably why they chose to stick with Linux 2.4. Also, hardware support on Linux 2.4 isn't anywhere near that of Linux 2.6, but for the type of boxes people typically use for gateway/firewalls you should be just fine.

Just my

for a firewall/ router based distro i would recommend PF Sense.
its freebsd based as long as you have a spare pc lying around and at least 2 nic cards 10/100 depending on your wan connection.
