OpenVPN > Debian Proxy Squid > Internet

Hello All,

I have an online job and my boss want me to work from Spain but I am traveling soon and I need to "virtualise" myself, basically to connect from other country and keep an spanish IP.
Therefore I hired a server running on Debian6 and I have installed Squid3 and OpenVPN.
My question is how to configure the Squid ( never did before ) and the OpenVPN server to make it work on my needs ...
I would like some advice, networking and routing is not my best area

Thanks a lot!

It sounds like you want to do several things:

1) Set up openvpn so that you can log in to the server in Spain while you are lying on the beach in France with your laptop. The configuration should also specify which traffic will go over the vpn and which will go direct to your local ISP for better performance. This uses the "push route" directives on the server.

2) Route traffic so that it appears to be coming from the Spanish server IP, when it is actually coming from your laptop. This can be done with iptables and SNAT on the server.

Squid lets you add caching and proxying, but isn't required in the above. I guess you were thinking to set squid up as a proxy and not have to mess with iptables on the server?

Thanks a lot for your answer, I am actually learning a lot from this experience ( I needed it though : )

I am actually having troubles setting up OpenVPN on a Debian 6 on my VPS cause the kernel lacks of the TUN module and I think is needed ( that is the error I got from OpenVPN when I try to start it ) I am trying to avoid a re-compile action of the kernel to include that module ( which I believe is the only way to get it working ) and searching on google I found a small app of tunnelling that could server my purpose , it is called QuickTun ( http://wiki.ucis.nl/QuickTun )

... what would be the difference between using OpenVPN and this QuickTun?
