i hav VMware and i intsalled linux suse 10.1 in a virtual machine and i created an NIS server with the name TheNis.com, then i made another virtual machine and i installed the same copy of suse 10.1 (didn't clone it). at user authentication step during installation i chose "NIS user" and i entered the same NIS server name and ip address i just created in the other virtual machine,it kept searching for like 7 minutes then it said it couldn't find an NIS server, knowing that i connected the two virtual machines with LAN1 and they have the same net ID, i couldnt connect to the SAMBA server too, can any one please tell me what i do wrong and thanx.

well NIS and VMware have nothign in common whatsoever, so you need to identify whether it's NIS or VMware's networking config at fault... have both machiens got seperate IP's? can you ping other boxes from them? what network model are you using in vmware?

i kno that VMware and NIs hav nothin in common i just thought this would be a good subject for the thread, as for the the two machines, the ist 1 has the ip 192.168.150.25 and the other has 192.168.150.24 and they ping each other succefully but the 2nd wont join the NIS server created in the 1st 1, and as i said before the two machines are virual machines made with VMware 5.1, i don think that VMware has anything to do to the fact that the
2nd machine doesn't find the NIS server,i wish you could help me, thank you.

ok, well are there firewall rules stopping it? are there any entries for it in the NIS logs? is NIS even running??
