NFS v3 vs. v4 performance

I am running RHEL 6.3. I was using NFSv4 and it was recommended I move to v3 due to some performance issues with v4. However, I am not so sure. I am getting application layer timeouts that I wasn't before. I am not 100% sure its related to NFS yet but want to hear some opinions.

Here are the mount options:
rw,suid,dev,exec,auto,nouser,async,noatime,nodiratime,_netdev,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,nolock,nfsvers =3

Hi,

Apparently from your mount option you are using NFS version 3 not 4.
Can you clarify?
My choice would have been to go for NFS version 4 and fix the issues there, without falling back to NFS version 3.
