Not sure if this is what you're after though!

"netware" is a typo for "network", right?

I recently looked for the same thing -- free networked backup solutions with the backup server running Windows. I didn't find any so switched to free networked backup solutions with the backup server running Linux. That lead to Amanda and Bacula; I chose Bacula because it had a Windows client and GUI which Amanda does not (Zmanda does).

It turns out Bacula 5.0.1 can run with the backup server on Windows. It may be a recent port and it is not as heavily used (so is less well tested by usage and there is a smaller knowledge base in the community).

Yup. You're wrong (the O.P., that is). Amanda is freely available. Zmanda does have some enterprise and support addons that cost, but the backup software is open source and freely available. If you look at the main page - http://amanda.zmanda.com/ - you will see "Download Amanda Community" at the top right.

However, I don't know that you can run Windows as the backup server. I think you need one of the Linux boxes to be the backup server. The Windows machines can be clients.
