openfiler is customized Linux distro which support NAS and iSCSI
means it uses NFS, samba and iSCSI target. so at all this is a linux distro and it works like linux it is not exact SAN.
if you want to give yourself a start to understanding things on linux, lun with iSCSI and NAS specially on linux side than it is good but working on SAN is different.

I believe NetApp requires you to be a customer for this.
SANs are strange beasts, but SAN administrators tend to make them out to be more strange than they need to be.
I agree that some sort of tutorial based simulator is needed. It took me ages to pick up on things in the SAN world to get to the point where I could manage one.
