Welcome to LQ!!

I assume you are trying to mount a flash memory stick or something similar.

What distro (version of Linux) are you using? The modern ones will typically mount such a device automatically when it is inserted.

If you are trying to mount it manually, how are you determining the device ID? (One way would be using "dmesg|tail")

Do this before pluggin the Flash Device

Quote:
tail -f /var/log/messages
It will show you a device name(something like /dev/sdb) when you plug in your flash device.

Now issue this command

Quote:
mount /dev/sdb /media/
Now you will be able to access your device file in /media folder.

Good Luck.

What says it's already mounted? Where? What are you doing to get the "device already mounted" message?

If it's already mounted, type in "cd <whatever mount point>"; usually it'll be "cd /media/disk". You don't say what version or distro of linux you're using, so it's hard to be more specific.

Once you're in the mount point, type in "ls", and it'll show you everything on that drive. You can also run Konqueror, and the device will show up there. Click it, and it'll open.

Ummmm---yes, but: You will now have hidden anything else in /media. Much better to make a new directory (mount point)
