Hi -

No, no, no: it's almost certainly *not* "a simple problem, like port name".

It *is* almost certainly a simple problem, like:

a) you're not using the correct password for "root"
... and/or ...
b) "root" is defined ... but not for "localhost"
... or ...
c) "root" isn't defined at all

1. "mysql" is your friend.
Use it. Live it. Love it

2. When you tried "mysql -uroot -pPASSWORD"... you
didn't specify "PASSWORD", did you? You used your real password, didn't you (just checking)?

3. Failing all else, I urged you to try to reset the root password.
Again, please try this if nothing else works:

* http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/resetting-permissions.html

* http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/mysql-change-root-password/

* http://www.nixexp.com/index.php/2006/12/16/how-can-i-reset-mysql-root-password-root-password-recovery/

Please let us know what you find.

Please continue cutting/pasting your exact command, and the full error message - it helps!

Thanx in advance!
Thanks you very much BTW, rocket science is easier

Glad you got it working

BTW - I like your web page.

Coincidentally, one of the things I'm working on is installing OpenWRT on my Linksys WRT54GS.

The problem is that my DSL (combined DSL modem/Wireless router) is downstairs, I have a server I'd like to run 24/7 upstairs, and the stupid D-Link Wireless USB stick I bought for it isn't reliable enough. And the server doesn't have any spare PCI slots to put in another, better, 802.11 wireless card. USB, or wired/Ethernet, are my only options.

So one option would be to spend $50.00, buy myself an access point, and plug my upstairs server into an Ethernet jack in the new access point.

A BETTER option is to install OpenWRT on my Linksys WRT54GS (which I don't need anymore: my new DSL modem handles wireless just fine), and use the Linksys as an access point (or "wireless bridge": I'm unclear about the terminology).

Any advice/suggestions would be welcome!

Again: congratulations on getting MySQL working!

That would be an access point. Unless it would connect 2 different subnets to each other, in that case it is a bridge. An access point is something like the traditional hub or switch.

I guess you have no other option to connect your server by wifi... I probably don't have to remind you that you will loose a lot of performance compared to connecting the server to the router with a UTP cable.

WiFi is very open! Make sure you use a 'WiFi bridge'. The bridge will only allow connection from one mac address to another. This way you can controll access to your network.
