You shouldn't start mysqld daemon using /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld. You can use the mysql.server script that comes with the binary distribution:
Code:
/usr/local/mysql/support-files/mysql.server start

Most probably, you have installed mysql databases as 'mysql' user just like written in INSTALL file. So to start mysql use "mysql" user
PHP Code:
[root@localhost ~]# cd /usr/local/
[root@localhost local]# cd mysql
[root@localhost mysql]# bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data
Let us know whether it's a 64-bit server you are trying to start mysql on.

You will still want to read the security section of the manual as suggested. The root account on the database initially has a null password. You may also want to delete a couple test databases that allow global access.
