My Debian VPS has fluctuating latency

Hi there,

I'm a customer of a VPS host powered by HyperVM.

My issue is that my VPS is fluctuating in latency. One minute, it's very fast. The next, it slows down and takes 5 or more seconds to load a page.

Other users say there are definitely slow points for them.

My load average stays well below 1, and I've never seen it go above 1.5.

I have 128 mb ram, 50 of which is usually available.

This problem occurs any time, no matter how many users are connected.

My site uses mysql SELECT queries heavily. In fact the entire site interacts with a mysql database in some way.

I have properly indexed the tables that I SELECT from.

I have optimized and repaired my largest tables.

I have query cache enabled and gave it a generous quota.

Please help me further troubleshoot this problem. Thanks.

That's a calssic example of an over populated VPS server. In other words, there may be way too many VPSs on the same host - as soon as a few people start doing something, everybody feels the slow down. The slowdown usually occurs because of disk speed (and not RAM/CPU).

I would recommend moving to a better plan (which usuallu means less VPSs on teh same server) or moving to another provider which doesn't oversell - I particularly recommend linode.com

OP,
Was saman007uk's analysis correct, & what did you do about it?
