make server act as a gateway in file transfer

Hi,

I want to transfer some files from my home computer to my computer at the university. However, since the university has a firewall I can't ssh/scp directly to my desktop in the university from outside.

So we have sort of a gateway system where we can ssh and from there we can ssh to our individual computers.

This is all fine if I just want to login. But the issue is I often need to transfer files from my home computer to uni computer. At the moment what I do is I copy the files from my computer to the gateway computer and from there I copy it to my uni computer. As you can see if I'm copy a number of files this tends to get tedious.

I was wondering whether there is a way I could copy directly from my computer to the uni computer, by including the gateway?

Thanks.

Well it depends how the network is running really, if the network security is configured as I'd expect then it should not be possible (or rather should not be easy). What you're after suggests that you should be able to ssh onwards from the gateway machine into the internal device, which shouldn't be possible. within the realms of ssh you could possibly have a reverse ssh tunnel running to permit this. Here you'd ssh into the gateway machine with an R option from the internal machine, e.g. ssh user@host -R 1234:127.0.0.1:22 and then once ssh'd into the gateway from home you should be able to ssh to 127.0.0.1:1234 and get the ssh server of the internal machine.

Maybe you'd benefit from some sort of rsync on a cron, every few minutes do an rsync over ssh to make sure anything on the gateway in a known location is pulled down to the internal machine. You'd not want to do this more than every 5 minutes though really, otherwise i'd expect / hope your admins would get pissed off with you.
