Mail Server Setup


hi there,
im new to linux things
so im trying to setup a local mail server
using just the server services available in suse 8.0
i have try few setting but the best i can get is im able to use pop3 but cant use smtp server..
when i try to connect to my mail server, it keep saying "461 cannot find smtp server"
i try check at the inetd start/stop services and the pop3 and smtp is actived
when i check on the consule..it say address is being used
may i knw how to solve this problem?

what smtp server are you using? sendmail? postfix? does it show up in the output of "ps ax"? you can try telnetting to port 25 on your machine (just run "telnet 127.0.0.1 25") and that will connect to smtp if it exists. if it doesn't connect you've probably not got it running at all.

im trying to use postfix
it say smtp/tcp(2):binds:address already in used
and i cant telnet into the smtp
im not sure i did it correctly, but i have activated the smtp service in the Start/stop Service(Inetd)
but somehow i cant find postfix smtp only manage to find sendmail's smtp
please guide me on this
