LVM filtering question

I have a disk:

Disk /dev/sda: 8001.5 GB, 8001529667584 bytes

which im trying to create a PV on.
I tried both of the following filters, but it's still saying that it's excluded by filter.

filter = [ "a/.*/" ]
filter = [ "a|^/dev/sda$|", "r/.*/" ]

# pvcreate /dev/sda
Device /dev/sda not found (or ignored by filtering).

If pvcreate sees that the device currently has partitions defined, it will refuse to use it. You can either use a partitioning tool and delete the existing partitions (pvcreate will warn that it sees the DOS MBR signature, but will offer to wipe that and continue), or you can zero the entire MBR ("dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda count=1").

Either way destroys the existing partitioning. I hope that's what you intended.
