thllgo, thanks for the tip. We had incorrect NETWORK and BROADCAST settings in our /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 config file. Fixing - or removing - them solved the problem.

The gateway now shows up normally on reboot or network service restart.

Ok... so now that I feel like I'm going insane, I'm curious, is there any behavior on the router/switch side that could prevent a route from being added?
