Linux server to manage or cache Windows Updates for several Windows desktops

At my work I've set up a Centos 5.4 server to provide various services to a bunch of Windows XP desktops. I've got a Squid+DansGuardian+ClamAV web proxy, and a Samba file server.

At the moment, all the desktops are set to automatically update. This results in each desktop independently downloading the Windows Updates. The internet connection is rubbish, so that's not an ideal state of affairs.

What I want to do is have the updates downloaded ONCE, and then installed on all the Windows XP machines. Fully automated would be ideal. A method that will also work with Windows 7 would also be ideal, since we're getting a couple of 7 desktops.

What are methods of going about this?

I have not done this on a Linux box, but you can use WSUS server for this. Download all the updates to this and then push those updates locally the clients.

I haven't used it myself yet, but I came across this website a couple of days ago: http://unattended.sourceforge.net. It might be what you are looking for.

Will people stop posting phone numbers and asking for help in this thread? Unless you have something to say about my own question, post somewhere else.

Anyway...

I've come across this

I know its an old post but....

there is nitrobits update server, might me just what the doctor order even if its a little late... I am also testing with using a DNS server to redirect the windows update server traffic to it vs need to update the registry of each machine
