How do you want to take the backup?

A complete (block for block) disk image can be done with dd, or partimage, clonezilla is a LiveCD which facilitates disk imaging quite well.

To take a filesystem backup, rsync and or tar will do the trick. A google search will turn up a number of good scripts for backing up a filesystem, or parts there of.

Hello,

What do you mean with OS image? A 'clone' for disaster recovery? Have a look at CloneZilla, I'm almost sure it'll provide what you're looking for if I understood you correctly.

Kind regards,

Eric

Clonezilla for a complete image copy, although that does mean taking the host machine offline while you backup. My personal preferenace is to backup up the whole machine to a tape and have a backup / restore / DR plan.
