linux on multiple cores

I am not a programer, but computer hardware oriented.
I need (white paper ? ) on the mechanisns of sharing/multiple copies of O/Ses in systems or one O/S for multiple cores. I other words, how does servers ( AMD, Intel or Apple ) make use of O/S with multple cores.
Then a white paper on how the APPS work with multiple cores under Linux. Regards, Gunnar Reslow
