lighttpd doesn't display "application/octet-stream" files

I'm having a problem with lighttpd handling files. I have a lot of plain text files without any file extensions. If I request these files, I want them to display in the browser (the way Apache handles them by default), but instead lighttpd wants me to download them as a "BIN" file.

I imagine there must be some simple section of lighttpd.conf to add but so far I have found nothing. Any ideas are welcome...

If you look at the configuration for "mimetype.assign", the last entry indicated as the default type (where the file has no extension). If you are sure that all files without extension should be treated as text/plain, then change it to the type you want.

However, I think is not a good idea to name a file without extension.
