legitimate sender but with peculiar email address

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. It may be an easy question but I'm not 100% sure.

For your info, I'm hosting my own Mail Server using Postfix and dovecot for IMAP.

Lately (last monday and tuesday), I've been noticing something peculiar happening to a couple of emails coming into my inbox. They came from a legitimate client of mine. It's not the first time we've been corresponding through emails.

I've always received emails with his correct email address for example info@myclientdomain.com. That's what I've been seeing in my outlook.
one email coming last monday has got my client email address as 9dcdd6_gq2tinrqgmza8@n.servicem8.com.

From the log file, I noticed that it comes from a different server - either a8-95.smtp-out.amazonses.com or sc-ord-mta113.mtasv.net.

But on other occasion, it comes from the right SMTP server. It's pretty random.

Just wondering if anyone would be able to enlighten me on this. It looks like spam to me at the start.

Thank you in advance

Hi There,

I work for ServiceM8 as part of the customer support team and thought i would provide some insight.

ServiceM8 is an field service app for small business (plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, etc), so if you've received an email from @n.servicem8.com from a client/supplier then it's likely they are using ServiceM8 to manage their jobs.

The reason for the string of characters at the start of the email address is so any replies are correctly delivered back to the customer relevant to your specific job / enquiry, it's fairly standard practice for helpdesk/facebook/two-way email systems to ensure email replies are delivered to the correct recipient.

The reason for the different servers is because of the volume of emails we deliver on a daily basis, so amazonses.com and mtasv.net are both email providers we use to deliver email on our clients behalf.

Hope that clears things up,

Cheers,

Ben

Thank you JJJCR and Benford for your replies.

That's a very clear explanation I'm looking for. Thank you Benford for clearing the confusion here. I can have a good rest at night now
