I would begin by trying a more recent kernel. I know that, at the least, 2.6.9-42 is available on RHEL 4, if not a more recent kernel.org kernel. Failing that, consider filing a kernel bug.

the most recent kernel supported by redhat for RHEL4 is 2.6.9-55.0.2

You won't get support for kernel 2.6.9-34, they'll tell you to update to RHEL 4 update 5.
