Java garbage collector question

I have a general question concerning the java garbage collector (gc)for troubleshooting. I am newbie to java, so please be gentle.

To turn on gc is
#java --verbose:gc

Can on I turn on gc on certain java threads or does this turn it on for java services?

Once I have my needed information, how do i turn down the gc logging down to normal?

Maybe somebody with a better understanding of your question can answer it better but what you are doing is switching on verbose logging of the Java Object heap. It turns it on for all threads running on that instance of the jvm. Garbage collection itself is always on.
