it should run Apache on a Windows or a Linux platform.

A company wants to use Apache to host a web site and wants to know if it should run Apache on a Windows or a Linux platform. What advice would you give the company?

Generally, I think Linux is likely to be a more stable platform, but I doubt the company would listen to me from Adam.

There has got to be a reason that so many hosting companies use Linux for their hosting platform.

A web search for "windows linux hosting servers compared" should turn up some useful links, though it might take some effort to separate the marketing slop from the legitimate evaluations.

The company should decide who is going to be administering this server and if they have existing skills on a particular platform then they may find it easier to leverage those skills.

They should also examine why they need to run their own apache server, if it's for a simple "brochureware" website then they may be served just as well with a web-hosting account. If it's for a full e-commerce solution then perhaps a service provider that offers a full managed solution may suit their needs.

So the answer is "it depends".

It's free!! Windows has a license cost associated with it.

Well My personal choice is LINUX. No doubt LINUX gives you more security, more stability and more scalability.
IBM's server like firmware and AIX are based on RPM. Even now days, most popular technology CLOUD is using RPM based technology.
I don't think there is better solution than LINUX but it is only matter of perspective as I told before it is my personal view.[COLOR="Silver"]
