Hello all, I would like to thank in advance all those that attempt to assist me.

I'm not exactly new to the linux world. I've been messing with it for six months now. I recently decided to host a public web server out of my home. The is nothing business related merely personal. My domain is www.myrutherfordfamily.com

Now that you have a brief background I will bring you the technical details

I'm apache2 with php, joomla, and mySQL on openSUSE 11.2. a dns server is currently configured. My problem is as follows I set up apache initially and used the default index.html page which simply says It Works. I configured my DNS at the domain registar godaddy.com. After changing the A record to point to my IP the server worked. I then proceeded to install Joomla which installed correctly.

Now here is my problem. When I attempt to pull up my domain it appears my DNS is longer working properly and get a DNS error. When I attempt to go directly to IP with my server I still get the initial index.html that says it works. I'm not sure how this is possible and I have cleared all dns info, temp files cookies ect.... I have also had other people test this is as well. I've check my root document pointers for the apache website and they all point to the correct location.

My set up is as follows

Modem
Router
Windows 7 Machine
Sun Microsystems Virtual Box with openSUSE with the network adapter bridged so it can obtain an IP from my router

I'm completely lost at this point and have spent 2 days trying to resolve the issue, any help would be much appreciated. I look forward to everyones reply.

More than likely your ISP provides you with a dynamic IP address. So the record you set in your dns entry is going to end up out of sync.

I'm not to sure how godaddy.com allows you to set the dns, they might have something similar to this > http://www.dyndns.com/.

I am using a dynamic IP address. But what I'm finding strange is that it worked initially for the simple test page. Since the initial test page I set up php, mySQL and then Joomla. Right now I'm not even bothered by the fact my DNS is not working properly. What is confusing however is the fact that when I type in my IP address directly it still shows my test page. Even though that index file is no longer even on the server. It still shows the test index even if the server is off. My httpd.conf file is pointing the correct root document however.

You are getting that page from the cache?

Try to CTRL + Refresh you page

I wish it was that simple, that was one of the first thing's I thought of and tried.

It's from a cache somewhere just not my server. I can access the site from my own LAN. But not over the internet by either my IP or my domain name. What is odd and tripping my trigger is that when I type in my IP address in the browser it still showing the original index.html file. I've several other people test including testing from my phone and I'm still getting that page. I know my root document is set correctly other wise I would not be able to access it from my LAN.

ok, this may seem like a daft one, but when you changed the document root in the config file did you then restart apache.

failing that can you provide the output of "ls -alh" for you document root. And also you apache config file.

Problem Solved, My DNS records were not pointing to my IP for whatever reason. The second part of my issue was the one that shocked me the most. It appears that my router was caching the original html file. Go figure who the crap would know that a router would cache a freaking html file. Thank you for all of your help
