I have IPCop running at home and now I would like to set up an intranet. What would be the best way to go about this?
As the intranet is only for the local network not the internet, could I run the intranet server on the IPCop machine to save room and the need for more hardware, or would it be better to get another oldish computer and run linux as a server and install Apache on it?
I have no experience with IPCop, but I believe it is a "hardened" Linux firewall distribution. If it's Linux then there is always a way to achieve what you want.
Running other services on a firewall is generally considered bad for security as the firewall box is the most exposed to the outside world. Any compromise and the other services may provide a way in to your client machines.
I doubt the IPCop machine is heavily loaded and could easily run an Intranet. Apache can bind to only your LAN interface and the firewall should ensure that there is no route from the outside world to the Apache socket. Is there a way to run an Intranet from the IPCop HTTP interface?
If you have any Linux client machines it might be better (and easier) to run your Intranet from one of those or press an old machine back in to service.
