Intel i810 on-board graphics card bug, with Ubuntu server 7.04 running Ubuntu-Desktop
I recently loaded Ubuntu server 7.04 onto a machine with an Intel i810 on-board graphics card. After installing the OS I installed Ubuntu-Desktop using "Sudo apt-get install Ubuntu-Desktop" because I wanted a GUI enviroment until I setup WebMin for remote management.
After installing I booted up and just got a bunch of purple, white, red and green lines running vertically across the screen.
I tried setting the driver to "i810" but it didn't help. Apparently this is a known issue with the i810 card, but no one explains how to fix it. If you know how to fix this problem please let me know.
Some things to play with:
Check in BIOS if you can give it some more memory (4MB or so).
Change the colour depth in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to 8 and lower the resolution.
This is not really a server question.
Thanks for the Help
I fixed the problem by changing the color depth to 8 bit, allocating 5 Mb of memory to the card, and restricting the screen resolution to 800x900. I'm not sure if it was one, or all of those things that fixed it. I'm just happy to have it working and I don't plan to look into it anymore since I will be uninstalling the GUI when I get WebMin running.
Thanks so much for your suggestions I really appreciate it.
