I have a network of one XP pro, and 2 linux boxes (one Ubuntu606 and one Centos 4.3). Ubuntu (server606) runs samba3.0.22 and Centos (Pundit) runs 3.0.10.4E.9
When I run smbstatus on the Pundit, I see the hostnames of the computers for all the IPC$ shares, and for all other shares I see only the IP address of each machine. However, on the 606server smbstatus shows the hostnames of all the machines with a share open. Although this is not of great importance, I am trying to understand why such things happen.

Can anyone assist, please?

Have you checked Samba's release notes to see if this was a fix for something or other?
i had a brief look over this file and found a few entries for hostname additions/fixes but it is too long so i gave up - how about you have a look :-)
