i can't add a user to samba

i am using ubuntu lucid lynx and when i issue the command

sudo smbpasswd -a <username>

and type in the password twice like it says i get this message

Failed to add entry for user <username>

whats going on here it should be that easy

The user you want to add to the Samba password database must already exist on the system.

So you must first create the system account with "useradd", then add it to the Samba password file with "smbpasswd".
