How to, set-up home (1 computer) FTP server using DSL connection, no router?

I'm going to start a new thread because previous searches have not totally satisfied my question. I've read all day about doing this but each inquiry leads to discussion of configuring the router. I am also not network savy.

I would like to set up an FTP server on my home computer (presently Ubuntu 8.10). I have only one computer. I am using DSL with my telephone line for internet connection. I do not use a router.

Is it possible to do this with no router and only a DSL ISP connection?

Thanks for any replies,

Yes, it's possible. Just don't do the router part.

On a side note, please use SSH/SCP/SFTP/rsync-over-ssh instead of FTP: http://www.43folders.com/2008/07/14/dump-ftp

AlucardZero, or anyone :-),

I can hardly keep my eyes open for all the online reading I've been doing the past 3 days about vsftpd configuration.

I've got my FTP server working, but for the life of me I can not find mention anywhere of how to connect to my system externally. Like from another city. I'm using a DSL connection on a standalone computer system. I do not have a router, just the DSL modem.

I'd sure appreciate any pointers on how to connect to me from afar.
