how to set postfix and client auth

Hi everyone,

I have a Mandriva 2007 box setup as mail server for a domain with postfix. Everything works fine, users can send and receive mail. I can telnet to the server on port 25 and receive,

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localhost (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail.demo.com ESMTP Postfix (2.3.3)

I want to allow users not on the local LAN to be able to send mail through the server with SMTP authentication.
I Installed cyrus-sasl.
But when I set,

#smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
#smtpd_sasl_local_domain = $myhostname
#broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes

in main.cf, and I try to telnet to port 25, i only get,

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localhost (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

I have been trying to get this smtp authentication to work for weeks now, but I just can't get it right.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Look in your logs for an error message.

I have looked in /var/log/mail/info, but I cannot see any errors.
It just seems like the client times out when I add the changes to main.cf

I really need to be able to send mail from clients not on the lan, but I dont want to have a open relay for spam.

Can anyone assist me?
