how to protect a folder from bots in apache2

I have a webserver with some sensitive information in a folder. The folder is not published, my website has scripts that accesses it to retrieve the information.

Currently, the autoindex is disabled. Is there something else I can do to protect this folder? For example, what can I do to prevent wget -R from downloading my entire website? What about other bots?

Please help.

Don't put it in the path that the webserver serves. Put it somewhere else on the filesystem, since you have scripts accessing it they don't need to be in the webserver root area.
