How to install desktop environment on VPS and vnc into it?

Hello,

I own a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and I would like to install a desktop environment on it. After installing the desktop enviroment, I would like to install a VNC server on the VPS, after that I would like to be able to configure the VNC server remotely via SSH and then log in using VNC to connect to that VPS. Is that possible? The reason I wanted to do that is because I want to use their internet connection to browse the web, their speed is like 6 times faster than mine because they have backbone which I can't afford.

How can I do that?

Thanks.

First you will be bottle necked by your connection. Graphical data is far more bandwidth clogging than Hypertext. I.E. VNC will use more bandwidth than just browsing the web. Plus any media content on sites will not be very smooth on VNC, if they play at all. That said what you want to do is relatively trivial depending on your VPS solution. If you have control over any and all software on the machine then just use the distributions package manager to install VNC, SSH, and the Desktop Environment of your choosing. Once installed configure them as you would normally, you can find thousands of tutorials on VNC and SSH configuration. If you choose to go this route (and it is not a bad idea if you want a graphical means to configure some things in your VPS server) then I would recommend only opening the VNC to localhost then running the VNC connection over an SSH tunnel. This will encrypt your VNC session and VNC sessions are not normally encrypted.
