how to get tar.gzip files from box to usb drive

I have about 6 files that are tar'd and gzipped totaling about 70G that I am trying to get from a hard drive on a red hat enterprise server onto a WD 250G external hard drive. (uncompressed, untar'd the files are 300G) Each time I've tried to use cp, the transfer dies. and the errors say the system is out of memory Is there a better way?

Both file systems are ext3.

Anyone have any idea why or even better what to do about it?
