How to: Centralized account administration/file sharing with linux servers/clients

I've been racking my brains on this for months. Is anyone out there using a linux server to manage user accounts and logins from linux clients? If so - can you please provide some input on how. I am trying to setup a linux 'domain' for 20 users that will allow centralized administration of user accounts and allow for controlled access to file shares. I've looked at samba, openldap, and to some small degree kerberos but have not gotten any of them to work sucessfully. The closest I've come is getting LDAP to successfully recognize a login but I was unable to login because of an error that the users home directory didn't exist. What I am interested in is hearing from people who have SUCESSFULLY deployed this type of environment and how they were able. Most of the tutorials on this subject I found seem incomplete or outdated and I would like get a solid methodology documented. I am currently using Centos 5.1 for my server but I am not married to that as my distro choice. Thank you in advance for the help.
