Usually any MTA like postfix is sufficient. Wordpress like most other PHP CMS and Blog applications will use the sendmail command to send out emails for confirmations, signups, etc.

i'm trying the steps at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Po...asicSetupHowto

the part that says 'Test your default setup'
i'm not able to see any messages when i type the 'mail' command- "No mail for fmaster". i'm able to see the mail at the Maildir directory. this is a development server and its accessible in our LAN only and is for test purposes only. is there anything else i'm missing? thanks..

The mail command reads mbox formats, not Maildir. You can use the mail command to send mail. You need a Maildir capable MUA to read Maildirs.
