How do I configure sendmail to accept/send mail from outside our network?

I've got a web/mail server set up with a static IP (our company's). Problem is, I can't send mail from ouside of our local network. Receive is not a problem.

telnet www.<myCoName>.com from inside the local network works.

but from outside the local network (using a windows box) it fails with:

"Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed.

You don't say what version/distro of Linux you're using, or what mail software you're using, or anything about your environment.

From outside your network, do you have a route through your firewall/DMZ? What kind of rules?

Several reasons come immediately to mind, the smtp server isn't listening on an outside interface, a firewall is blocking the traffic (either your company's, locally, and also many isps also block port 25 traffic), etc.

I am somewhat curious how you are receiving email if smtp is not available (since sending email (25) uses the same port as delivering email (25), unless by "receiving" you mean getting email from the server via pop3/imap/mailspool.)

Hope that helps.

You can recive , but not send.

I suppose you telnet to your own server or another local server and works

"telnet www.<myCoName>.com from inside the local network works."

and you try to telnet (25) the windows box but it not works

"but from outside the local network (using a windows box) it fails with:
Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed."

If you try to telnet(25) from your server to another server outside your networks and you can't. Well try again using ip instead, if not , check the networks part to allow it.
